Wedge and Pop
Our apple wedger was a vast improvement over the competition in regard to usability and safety.
The original ask on the brief was an apple wedger with an adjustable center that could accommodate various size apple cores.
I went back to the beginning and saw an opportunity for improving the function as well improving safety for the consumer.
Problem
Most apple corers and wedgers do not cut all the way through. Thus, creating a safety issue when trying to remove them.
When stored the blades are exposed and can cause injury to the consumer as well as reduce their sharpness
The ask was to develop a new wedger that cut all the way through and was safer than the competition.
Discovery
After several rounds of initial concepts and prototyping, I discovered by adding a base with raised protrusions between the blades would allow the apple to be cut all the way through.
Once this theory was proven the base was incorporated into the wedger solving two issues. After slicing the apple, the cover swings closed forcing the entire apple through the blades
No loose parts. The base could not be misplaced
The cover protected the blades while being stored in a drawer or cabinet
Solution
After several rounds of initial concepts and prototyping, I discovered by adding a base with raised protrusions between the blades would allow the apple to be cut all the way through.
Final design
Once the original design was completed it was patented and we applied it to other versions for our other brands and price points.
